Applicable design methods and tools that have resulted from my research and teaching.

  • FSE Framework.

The Feature, Specification, and Evidence (FSE) Framework is a tool designed to help practitioners and students clearly communicate design rationales. It guides users in breaking down products into their key features and mapping how each feature addresses specific requirements, supported by critical evidence gathered during the design process (e.g., product testing). This framework, developed by Mirabito et al., fosters a structured approach to connecting design decisions with their underlying justifications.

  • Identity wheel.

The identity wheel exercise is a tool for exploring the multifaceted aspects of identity. Ideal for workshops, classrooms, or individual reflection, it prompts engineers and designers to consider how various dimensions of their identity—such as race, gender, and professional roles—intersect and influence their experiences. This worksheet was modified from the University of Michigan to be used in an engineering and design context for how we engage with one another and our stakeholders.
